Welcome to the JCount pasting help page. This page is intended to help you easily paste your new JCount counter into your web page. It will give you step-by-step illustrated instructions to help you. Since I am a Win95 user, the illustrations use Win95 programs. Aside from the program used, I believe that pasting into your page on the Macintosh would be similar. Before starting, you should either have your web browser open to the page with the counter code displayed, or you should have your e-mail program open with the e-mail message containing the counter code displayed.
On a Win95 system, I recommend using notepad. You should
be careful to use a text editor. An HTML
editor such as Netscape Composer may not work
properly. To start notepad, first press the
button in the lower left corner of your
screen. A menu will pop up. From this menu, choose
"Run..." A dialog will come up asking you what
program you want to run. Type "notepad" into the
dialog then press the "OK" button. A picture of
the dialog with "notepad" properly typed in is shown
below:

Notepad should now be open on your screen. You now need to open your web page in notepad. To open your web page, you first need to choose open from the file menu of notepad. An illustration of this is shown below:

The open dialog will now be shown. The next part may be a bit tricky. You will need to find your web page on your hard drive and tell notepad to open it. If you know where your web page is located on your computer, go to that directory and select your web page. You will need to change the drop down box on the bottom of the open box that says "Files of type:" to "All Files." The most common file names for web pages are "index.html," "index.htm," and "Default.htm." Once your web page is selected, press the open button in this dialog. If you do not have any idea about what directory your web page is in, you can use the find feature of Windows 95. For help using the find feature, please go to the find help page. Here is the open dialog just before opening a web page:

In this case, the page that I want to open is called Default.htm.
Once you have signed up for your counter, you will need to select the code that you were given so that you can copy it. To select the code, drag your mouse from the top of the code to the bottom. The selected code will be highlighted. Make sure that you select all of the code. Once you have all of the code selected, go to the edit menu of your browser, and select copy. Here is an Internet browser with the code properly selected and the edit menu open to the copy command:

As a result of step 2, your web page's source code should be open in notepad. It will look something like this:

In most pages, if you insert the JCount code just before the </body> tag, your counter will appear just before the end of the page. To paste the code, place your cursor just before the </body> tag, as illustrated above. You now should go to the edit menu and select paste. This is illustrated below:

The JCount code should now be properly pasted into your page. All that is left is to save your page. To save your page, simply go to the file menu, and select save. This is shown below:

You can now exit notepad by double-clicking on the X in the upper right corner of notepad. Your counter is now saved into your page. You must now upload your web page back to the Internet using whatever method you usually use to upload it. If you are unsure how to upload a web page, you will need to contact your ISP. The method that you use to upload web pages varies from ISP to ISP. One thing to be careful with is that Netscape Communicator modifies the counter code so that it will not work. Therefore, you should upload the page manually if you are using this editor. If you save the page in Netscape Communicator, you will probably need to remove the code and perform the steps above again to repaste it. If Netscape modified your code, you will know because your counter will no longer count.
