The word “motivation” is derived from the word “motive,” which in simple words is described as “the reason to do something.” Thus, your motive is always internal to you and is externalized by your behaviour that forms your motivation.

You have a desire – you want to achieve it – but what determines your success is your motivation. Having a desire is not just enough; you should have a hunger for it. So, if you have a desire, motivation is what converts it into a goal for you and externalises itself as your behaviour.

Even if you plan your best, you are bound to face obstacles in your path, and the pressure related to it never goes away. So you have the option to either fight it or feed it.  If you are able to turn this pressure into motivation, you turn out doing your best.

Motivation is a means of getting done what you want to get done. Though desire is the key to motivation, determination and commitment that comes through this motivation help you achieve your goals and make the difference. Thus, it is motivation that helps you start with something and work sole heartedly in the pursuit of achieving it.

Theory of motivation

Abraham Harold Maslow, the American psychologist, famous for his theory of hierarchy of needs, stated that people are motivated for the fulfilment of their needs. The fulfilment of basic needs motivates people motivates them to fulfil their psychological needs and then to attain self-actualization needs.

So, the ultimate motivation for every human being is attainment of this self-actualization which simply means, “What a man can be, he must be.” Motivation is thus a means to achieve the fulfilment of these needs and be at peace with yourself.

Motivation can beat talent

Motivation is everything. It is not an exaggeration to say that motivation can even beat talent. A person may be highly talented and skilled but without a desire or motivation to enhance those skills that talent becomes a waste.

On the other hand, a person who is less skilled but has the desire to learn something or to achieve something and is determined and committed for it, through proper motivation, achieves it.

Consistency of motivation is the key

Merely having a motivation is not enough! It helps you start off but to be successful you need to have consistency in your motivation. Edmund Hilary, the first mountaineer from New Zealand to reach the summit of Mount Everest with the Tibetan climber Tenzing Norgay in 1953, quoted, “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves. I think it all comes down to motivation. If you really want to do something, you will work hard for it.

Motivation doesn’t stop when you have a desire and start moving towards it. You need to be persistent and keep moving towards your goal by motivating yourself every time, every day, everywhere, to reach the goal.

Successful entrepreneurs make their process innovative to keep them self motivated towards the goal. They include work on travel, active being remote and shopping by hunting hefty discount deals on sites . This kind of activities keep struggling entrepreneurs motivated even after achieving the goals.

Through motivation you can make a difference in other’s life

Motivation is needed for anything you do in life and so is for everyone else also. Everyone needs motivation to go for what they desire. If you motivate others, you actually enrich the meaning and purpose of your own life. It gives you a feeling and sense that your contributions matter and energises you for working longer, harder, and smarter.

The feeling of self-worth further enhances your motivation for self-actualization while adding meaning to other’s life also. Sometimes a motivation is all that a person needs to turn out with something extraordinary that can be of great importance to mankind.

Inspiration is different from motivation

Inspiration is something that boosts the creativity and innovation in you by enabling you to brainstorm and innovate. Sources may vary ranging from music, story, news, report, dream, movie, or some lyrics. Whereas, motivation is what makes you put this creativity to use and execute your ideas to come up with something extraordinary.

Ambition is different from motivation

Your ambition is an intense form of your desire and motivation is the force that puts action into it. Thus, you need motivation to be able to achieve your ambitions and desires. This not only makes a difference in your life but in the life of others also.

Walt Disney has thus given a perfect adage of motivation that makes a difference by quoting, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
