In this fast-paced world, entrepreneurs and professionals today are faced with the challenge of keeping a balance between work and home. The working parents, in particular, are feeling the pressure as they juggle their work in the office and their responsibilities as mom and dad at home.

But this should not be an issue as long as working professionals find a way to maintain that balance in their daily lives. Even those employed by startups should not take this for granted.

Contrary to what many people that only corporate employees experience work overload and finding it hard to attain that work-life balance they so desire, those working for startups also face a similar problem. There are startup companies these days that require their employees to work long hours or extend their usual work hours. As such, many encounter problems regarding their families and marital relationships.

Amidst this issue, startups need to recognize the essence of work-life balance for the benefit of their employees including the working moms. After all, they would also be the ones to gain from this particularly when their workers are able to fulfill their obligations both at home and in the office.

Put Value on Needs of Employees

Workers need to be recognized for their efforts as well as their personal needs. They have spouses and families to support and children to send to school. This being the case, startup companies should be able to address their personal concerns such as when they need extra time to be with their family. It won’t hurt to be a little more understanding with their situation if need be. In fact, a work-from-home setup can be included in their schedule notably if the staff does not have any field work for certain days.

A research done by Pew has found that half of working parents still raising children below 18 years old admit they’re finding it hard to balance their professional career and their parenting responsibilities.

Delegate Tasks Fairly

Management should be able to delegate tasks to employees based on their specific skills. This way, work can be accomplished on time and workers can focus on what they do best.

In case there’s more work to do, managers and supervisors should ask employees first if they can physically and mentally handle additional tasks including those outside of their responsibilities. When they accept these tasks, the manager should also be responsible enough to check on these people to ensure they are doing fine and not overworked.

Recognize Stress and Mental Illness

Stress is a normal part of working in startups particularly as employees are often asked to work longer hours. But this can be eased if management cares for its people and finds a way to make sure that workers are still happy with what they do and are in good health. It is also a must that the staff be given a day off every week.

A study conducted by the Finnish Institute of Mental Health, for instance, found that people who work more than 11 hours each day are likely to experience depression. Once symptoms are showing, management should immediately take action and lessen an employee’s workload.

“Startup firms need to look after the welfare of their staff and must provide medical care assistance,” said Los Angeles Child Custody Attorney Marina Korol. “Working mothers should be given consideration in instances when they need to attend to emergency situations at home while married women should be allowed to pursue their pregnancy if needed,” she added.

Instill Value of Hard Work

A startup environment is ideal for encouraging creativity and innovativeness among the staff. It promotes hard work and personal ownership of products created in the workplace. As such, managers and owners should be able to recognize talent among their employees and instill the value of hard work.

Self-sustainability can also be attained in this kind of work setup. There’s no need to depend on other people which means you have every opportunity to hone your various skills every day that you work.
