A Helping Hand with Web Hosting

Are you finding it difficult to decide on hosting for your website?

If so, that’s completely understandable, the subject is sometimes overly complicated. Fully aware of this, we’ve put together a short article to tackle some points to consider before you pay for web hosting.

As a business owner, blogger, or website owner, the term ‘web hosting’ will have undoubtedly made its way onto your radar. It is so important to choose the right package, because your business will rely heavily on the hosting provider you decide on. It’s basically the foundations from which you build an online presence. Any negative impacts, such as server downtime, could ripple through your business and create a poor experience for readers or customers.

But before we begin, what really is web hosting?

In its simplest terms, web hosting is renting an area in a virtual world – the internet. You’re paying for a space to build your website. Each hosting provider is giving you a section of their land to set up on. You’re aim is to get the best land possible, one that’s secure, reliable, and can provide for your needs.

Below are 4 points to bear in mind when choosing where to set up:

Are you going to have enough bandwidth?

When people access your site, they require a certain amount of data to be transferred to their computer browser. Depending on how they need to interact with your website, they will need more or less data. The term bandwidth describes how much data can transfer between your site and its users.

A large amount of users can take up a lot of bandwidth, particularly if there is a lot of interactivity with your pages. As such, you need to make sure you have enough bandwidth in place. If not, some providers charge a premium to provide extra. It may be tempting to go for the cheapest option available to you, but if you’re constantly requiring more than your allocated amount of bandwidth, it will work out better financially to choose a bigger package.

Beware the free domains

It’s an age old saying – but sometimes things can be too good to be true. If you’re tempted by a free domain, make sure you check it out thoroughly.

One of the first questions to ask is, who owns the domain? You might have free access to the domain, but the company hosting your site might actually retain the ownership of it. If you ever want to leave, they could request you pay them a large sum of money. Either that or you’re never allowed to leave.

It might be free now, but is it free in the future? When you come to renewal after a year, it’s not uncommon for the price to be considerably over the market average.

Backup, then backup your backup

Your host may well provide a backup service. But do you really want to entrust such an important security feature solely on them? Most of the time, the answer is no.

At some point in our lives, we’ve all experienced losing work or important information. It’s not a nice experience. Now, if that was your livelihood, or years worth of work, imagine how difficult that would be. If you have any doubt or worry about the backup service your host provides, make sure you consistently backup your website to save a lot of despair.

Get to know the provider and how long they want to tie you in for

A lot can happen in a year. But when we’re talking about the internet, an incredible amount can happen in an amazingly quick amount of time. The point here is that you need to check out your provider’s track record. Can you trust them to give the service they offer for however long you need them to?

You might come across some spectacular deals, where if you pay for two years upfront, you’ll save huge amounts. Once you’ve signed up to this, you’re locked into two years, with the money already out of your bank account. If the service suddenly goes downhill, you’ll have to work hard to not go with them. So do your research and understand the length of time you’re signing up for.
