Entrepreneurs often get into business thinking that they’ll get to spend every day doing what they love, whether it be cooking, manufacturing, art, or any of countless trades.
The reality is that as a business grows, it requires more and more administrative time from the founder and leaves them less and less time to do the work that got them into business to begin with. This often leads to frustration and burnout as the American dream becomes a nightmare.
While there’s no way to eliminate all the administrative hassles of running a business, it is possible to farm out various tasks to an outside firm. Just like how you may have a dream of running a clothing store, somebody else had a dream of doing cleaning for small businesses. When you outsource to them, everybody wins.
Let’s look at some examples of work that you can let someone else take care of for you, and what it can do besides reducing your workload.
The Books
The money coming in and going out is what makes a business successful, yet it is still an area that most owners find burdensome and difficult. That’s the main reason that many companies prefer to outsource their accounting.
However, it’s more than just payroll and taxes that can be done. Billing is a big part of it, and some businesses can really benefit from outsourcing this function. Trucking is a good example; costs grow with every mile, so timely payment of bills is essential. A truck factoring company will take on the billing process in exchange for a percentage of the invoice, keeping the cash flowing and the effort outsourced.
Upkeep of Facilities & Equipment
What refined chef wants to go mow grass after a day in the kitchen? Not many, and they would probably lose money to do it. That’s what is known as opportunity cost, which is when you forgo one option for use of a resource in favor of one that is less beneficial. Most businesses know that they can hire out lawn care, but other tasks like specialized cleaning and weatherproofing can be taken care of by an outside firm.
As for our trucking company, managers can often get out from under the hood and get back to booking loads if they contract with a company for on-site maintenance and repair of trucks and trailers. At a certain size, the company may have an in-house mechanic, but until then, this is a great way to save.
Social Media Management
If you’re not on social media, you are in trouble. Even a very specialized company can benefit from a strong presence online. Yet the commitment required to place meaningful posts on various platforms, and to respond to comments and messages, can be so burdensome as to be impossible to keep up with.
Yet again, you can farm this work out to someone else. There are social media managers out there who can easily keep up all your social media accounts, based on guidelines you establish. This helps you get timely posts out there to boost your company without having to spend half the day hunkered over your phone.
Running a business is a complicated undertaking. On top of having to produce a great product or service, you have to do the administrative functions as well. When you’re baking cakes in the evenings for some extra cash, it’s not such a big deal, but when your business grows, the other chores can turn into a major burden that you aren’t capable of dealing with, or that you simply don’t want to take time to deal with.
Outsourcing these functions can make a win-win situation in which you focus on outcomes and somebody else manages the other tasks.
