In such a competitive job market, more people than ever are applying for each job. So you need to make sure that you stand out from the crowd when you are in a job interview. You want to stand out in a good way and be remembered. Though the interviewer will take notes during the interview, it is better if they can remember you as the enthusiastic one or the motivated one. You don’t want to be remembered as the dull or boring one.

Some people say that you should take control in an interview. This isn’t always the best advice. The interviewer should be in control in reality. You can be as helpful as you can be and make sure that you are ready for everything. The key to standing out is preparation. You need to research about the company and the about the interviewer. Make sure that you have questions ready for them but can also wow them with some of your knowledge about their company or brand.

In your preparation, it is a good idea to have some scenarios in mind so you can prepare for them. What examples have you got to share? Stories are much more relatable than just spouting out statistics. So think about anything you have experienced that is relevant. It makes you much more relatable and human. As well as applying to the advertised role, you are also applying to be the interview panel’s colleague; they want to know that they could get on with you.

More and more interviews and requiring you to do presentations as part of the process. If you are asked to do a presentation, it might throw you off and make you a little nervous. It doesn’t need to, though. The best thing to do is make sure that you plan the presentation enough in advance. When you plan ahead of time, you will feel much more confident in what you are saying. Having the main points memorised is a great idea and will help you to come across well to the interviewer.

It might be a good idea to make something like a PowerPoint presentation to accompany you. Again, take the time to plan and prepare your PowerPoint design and layout. You need to be happy that you know what is coming next or you could end up getting flustered; never a good look when you’re aiming to impress.

One thing to note is not to be too honest. When we find ourselves in stressful situations, we start spilling everything when we are probed. Prepare carefully and make sure that you have answers ready for tougher questions. If for example you didn’t complete University, talk about why you thought it was better for you to go into the workplace straight away. Don’t share that you hated it or always slept through your lectures, even if it is the truth. Preparing in plenty of time is key to have a successful job interview and making sure that you stand out from the other potential employees.
