Web design is a tricky facet of the online world. Anyone can build a site using a plethora of free tools, but can anyone build an effective site? More often than not, no. It’s hard to get right and easy to get wrong.
For businesses, websites are another source of income. They’re the hubs through which products are sold and ad revenue is generated. But none of that money will begin to flow without first addressing a few key concepts relating to your site’s layout.
Ad placement
By designing your site in such a way that your ads are subtle and non-intrusive, you make them more likely to be clicked. An advert that takes up half the page and slows the site down for the user will not result in those desired clicks.
So when you’re building your site, whether internally or with an external provider, account for ad space. Leave room for subtle banners and small popups, and not adverts that crush the whole page.
These ads also cover up any copy you’ve spent time working on, which makes your hard work go unnoticed.
Mobile-ready
Is that a smartphone in your pocket? Yes, yes it probably is. Over 2 billion people are roaming the Earth with one of these devices in their jeans, and with good reason. It’s communication, education and entertainment all in one tiny bit of kit.
And by appealing to this broad array of users, your website stands a better chance of making your business money. Search engines will punish you if your website isn’t up to their mobile friendly standards. That means you may not get the clicks that you desire, which results in lost revenue.
It’s not easy to create a mobile site, though. A lot of web hosts still offer poor functionality in this area, which means the struggle could prove big. Working with a professional web design company could help though, so don’t despair if you feel out of options.
Site navigation
The way your site is designed can have drastic effects on how much money you earn. If you’ve done your job right, people will be clicking on all the links that direct them to your products. By making these links easy to reach, the chances of people laying down some cash increase.
There are several ways to understand the effectiveness of your site navigation. One way is to use heatmaps to see where people are drawn to. Heat maps show you the ‘hottest’ areas of your site, and the places where most people click.
You can also run tests using your friends and family. Ask them to boot up your site and see where their eyes are drawn to. This tells you what’s working, and what’s not.
Landing pages
Landing pages are the pages that your customers will ‘land’ on when they click a link to your site. So, it’s important to make these as appealing and enticing as possible, to boost those sales.
Avoid any image sliders or unnecessary navigation bars here – just put a product, or an offer, front and centre. The person clicked that link for a reason, after all. Make it worth their while!
