Creating a Physical Entryway To Your Business

If the goal is to get people to purchase something from the inside of your business’s physical location, then it is up to you to create the best possible entryway into that world. Some aspects of the entryway you will have control over, whereas other elements are going to have to work with the environment in context.

Look at your physical entryway in terms of creating a vestibule, making sure the first few steps into your realm are calming, getting the outdoor lighting right, and putting up the appropriate signage that illustrates your brand identity in the right area.

The Vestibule

Creating a vestibule for your business is one of the most cost-intensive but unique and creative ways to make an entryway into your business. Depending on the situation of the street outside your location, there are many different ways to make this vestibule-style enclosure. Your best bet for inspiration is to look at what other stores have done this successfully, and then model your efforts after theirs. If you can find a way to create that transition space between the external world and the internal world of your business, you can put people in the mindframe to trust your brand.

The Calming First Few Steps

When you create an entryway into your business, you want to adjust people’s mindset into a calmer state. If after the first few steps in they see a receptionist, a menu, artwork, product list, or any other sort of icon of focus, that works to your advantage. The worst thing that you can do is have a chaotic entryway where there are no hints as to what the customer is supposed to be doing! If you’ve ever gone into a store and I’m confused about where to go to get your desired product or service, then you know what you’re trying to avoid with your efforts.

Outdoor Lighting

What does your storefront look like from the outside at night? If it doesn’t seem amazing, then it’s time to invest in some outdoor lighting. These don’t have to be expensive setups, but once you get everything arranged how you want, your store should look just as inviting at night as it does during the day.

Signage

And finally, there is the concept of signage. The entryway to your business should be signified by a sign. Sometimes this is the banner right above the front door. Sometimes there is a hanging sign that sticks out into the street to have people read were driving by. Without a sign, how is anyone going to know where your store is? It is hard to overstate the importance of having a graphic designer create the appropriate image, and having a company produce the right physical sign for you.
