Finding the perfect online freelancer – An interview session you should conduct

When it comes to choosing a freelancer for your project or upcoming business, it is generally easier to spot someone who is a not-so-good match for your company. However, the actual challenge lies in differentiating between the good ones from the great. You are bound to choose the best freelancer for your upcoming project with enough consideration. Before choosing an independent contractor, the interview is perhaps the most vital stage to go through.

Their proposal will offer you a brief introduction, how their skill and expertise caters to the needs of the project and a detail on how they will approach the project. But when you conduct the interview, this will take the introduction to the next level. There you will get a chance to speak frankly and check how well the person can communicate. Here are few questions which you may consider asking.

  1. Can you be proficient enough to meet the deadline?

If your project has a set deadline, you have to firstly know whether or not the freelancer is available to meet the deadline. Freelancers usually tend to manage several projects together but that doesn’t make them unfit for your project. But you just have to check that they are able to balance the project as per the client’s needs. Is he confident enough about his ability to meet milestones? What sort of approach does he have towards handling multiple projects?

  1. What according to you are the key skills required for this project?

In case you had already written a good job post and they have responded with a nicely-written proposal, the key skills can be identified right away. Look for understanding; do they really comprehend your project? Core skills aren’t always related to technical skills but rather on the way he perceives the project. Ask him about his weakest and strongest skill.

  1. Can you show me your portfolio of the previous works you’ve done?

When he is an experienced professional, he should be able to share few samples of his work and relate the projects he has done. How did he represent himself through the projects? Use your best knowledge to judge him based on that. How many years of experience have they had? Does their work speak about the skill level that you’re looking for?

  1. Can you share the feedback you’ve received from your previous clients?

There are many freelancers who have assembled testimonials and feedback of clients which they can share with people. You have to check whether or not the freelancer delivers high quality work and whether they communicate perfectly. Relationships while working are never flawless but you can definitely feel comfortable working with him. Is he giving you references of the people he has worked with earlier? Ask him to do so.
