There are many ways to go into business and many paths to success. Among the most popular ways to achieve business success is with a franchise. Of course, there are many types of franchises to choose from, but at the core, there are four fundamental aspects of a franchise that need to be examined to determine if the opportunity is a good one.
The product is in demand
This is not something you want to gamble on. There should be sales numbers of existing stores that clearly demonstrate people want to buy this product. The risk of introducing a new product to the market should have already been done. Franchising is about expanding a company with a proven product.
What is the market share relative to the competition
Every business has some form of competition whatever the product that is being sold. It may not be exactly the same, but as long as it can be seen as a substitute or alternative to the franchise product you are looking at, you need to know how big these companies are in the geographical area you are looking to do business in.
The locations available
Given where the product stands relative to competitors, you then need to evaluate where a franchise location will be. Which competitors are nearby, and how will that affect your sales? If there are no competitors nearby, is there a reason for this? Perhaps there are not enough customers to support any business of the type you are evaluating. Another issue with location is how close is the nearest sister franchise. Sometimes a company will sell franchises too close together.
The amount of support you will be getting from company headquarters
This is important, not only for your success, but to the success of all franchises. At the top of the list of support is training. You need to be able to run the business and provide the products to customers in the same manner as all of the other franchise owners are. Along with delivering a high quality product or service, you will also need assistance with local marketing, and have someone to talk to concerning any questions that may come to mind as you strive for success.
In addition to essential points listed above, you should enjoy, perhaps even have a passion for, the product or service that you will be selling. If all of the above mentioned elements are evaluated properly, then you are probably looking a a good franchise opportunity.
