As with all things, what worked in the past may not necessarily work in the present, and especially not in the future. Attitudes, experiences and knowledge change over time and you have to adapt to the changes or be left behind.
The same is true for personnel management in business. The traditional way of hiring and managing employees is changing along with the times, and you’d better be willing to change too if you want to hire and keep the best candidates that you can. Sure, the same principles may apply to human resources, but the implementation and execution of those philosophies are definitely changing with the advancement of technology. Here are a few ways you can keep up with the times to find the right people for your company.
Embrace Social Media
If you grew up in the 20th century, you may be reluctant to accept the fact that social media — Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the like — are very popular with the younger generations who will be looking for career positions in the upcoming years. If you want to find the best candidates, you’re going to have to embrace this technological trend and use it to your advantage.
In that past, you would advertise for job openings and interview anyone who walked through the door for the position. This could take a long time, especially if under-qualified people kept showing up. With social media, you can weed out potentially under qualified candidates because their resume and experience is right there online for you to see.
You can also use social media sites to advertise your openings. Once you learn the best times of day to post and reach the audience you want, you can let the people find you, saving you time and effort.
Use Analytics
Analytics is the study of data. With the rise of faster computers, this field of study has taken off in popularity, with analytics being used in everything from homeland security to sports. There’s a place for analytics in human resources as well.
By using analytics to understand your hiring processes and what your employees want from the company, you can stay ahead of any trends that may be on the rise in your sector of business. You can study work staff behaviors, reasons for why they stay (at leave), what drew them to your company in the first place… everything you may need to make the right decisions when it comes to personnel.
You can start using analytics by giving surveys to your employees and seeing how they respond. Taking their answers to questions seriously will give you a head start on knowing what to quit doing and what to continue doing to make your employees happy and successful.
Use Regular Performance Reviews
In the past, performance reviews were given once a year or so, in order to determine whether an employee should get a raise, or, if the company was downsizing, as a way to figure out which employees to keep. Today, you should implement performance reviews more regularly.
The reason for this is because everything — not just technology — moves faster than in the past, and things can change dramatically over the course of a few months. Performance reviews will give you a chance to praise those employees who are working hard and give you an opportunity to help those whose work is falling off. This is beneficial for both the employees and the company: having the right workers in place at all times will ensure the success of both.
Automate Your HR
One of the easiest things you can do is find ways for automating HR services. Companies like this can take over your human resource needs and help you find the best talent quickly.
Not only can automated HR excel at talent acquisition, it can take over the onboarding process and help with the learning and development of all new employees and existing ones as well. Automated HR can use all of the data at its disposal to find the right candidates and then give them a practical and powerful training program that will get them ready for their careers. It can also create reports and manage workflow scenarios that will make your office more streamlined. Finally, it can also keep up with audits and regulatory requirements, so you won’t have to worry about document storage or destruction again.
What worked in the past will inevitably give way to the future, so look for ways to update your human resources.
