We have looked at when you might consider outsourcing, but what about its twin – automation? In some ways, the answer is roughly the same. However there are some major differences too. Automation’s key advantage is that it offers a way to get things done without relying on any external people. This makes it the ideal choice for those businesses who are keen to keep everything as on-board as possible. One major reason you might choose to automate is because you want to streamline the communication in the office. If this is the case, then automation can make this a walk in the park. It is also useful for enforcing a certain accountability on a process. With automation, you don’t really take people away from the process. In fact, what happens if you create an owner for each step in the process. This makes it much easier to know who is responsible for what – something all business owners can agree is a powerful thing. Automation should also be considered if it is a task which is prone to manual errors. If you keep getting the same errors, and it isn’t a staffing or training issue, then automation is your solution. Moreover, when you automate, you can see the whole workflow much more clearly. This is a great solution for anyone who likes to have control.

There is, after all, a reason why they are both such popular solutions to common business problems. But which one is more likely to give your business a helping hand in a way which you will find positive? Automation makes your processes work easier, no matter who is doing them. In this way, it might appear to trump outsourcing. But with outsourcing, you still get the human touch that businesses so often need for their work. Clearly, you cannot easily have one without the other. The fact is, business as a whole needs both automation and outsourcing in varying combinations. Although, of course, your business in particular might need one more than the other. Ultimately, it is a matter of judging each case by its own merits. Sometimes, automation will be the solution you are looking for – and sometimes, outsourcing will be.
