Millions of people around the world have established operations on eBay, but are they doing everything they could be to succeed? People think that selling on eBay is simply a matter of taking a photograph of what you want to sell, uploading it, and then start taking bids. It’s not. There’s a lot more that goes into it.
Storage
When you start an eBay-based business, you’ll soon find out that you need a lot of storage. Big companies would never use employee’s houses to store their products, and you probably shouldn’t either. It doesn’t reflect well on the business and it’s enough to drive you mad. When the house is packed to the rafters with stuff in no particular order, you’ll lose your sanity, maybe even your marriage.
I’m not suggesting that you immediately need to get offsite storage for the stuff you’re selling. But I do think that it’s a good idea to set aside a significant patch of your house for stock. Choose a room and then organise that room depending on what you’re selling. If it’s books, then shelves would seem like an obvious answer.
Remember, use all the space available to you, even up to the ceiling. And keep it away from all the usual pollutants, including cigarette smoke and damp.
Shipping
Wouldn’t it be a shame if after going through all the effort of packing and advertising, you fell at the final hurdle? When you come to posting your goods, make sure that you double check all the labels on your package. If selling abroad, it’s a good idea to use a trusted International Parcel Delivery service. That means choosing one that will make sure your parcels arrive in one piece.

Research
Research is something that you need to spend a significant amount of time doing. It’s important that as a seller you know exactly what it is that you’re selling, and your buyers know what it is that they’re buying.
When you come to list your item, the effort that you put into research will show. How many times do you see sellers on eBay failing to give an adequate description of what they’re selling? It’s a surefire way to make sure that your product goes unnoticed.
Photography
The same applies to photography. Having an enticing picture of the product is more likely than not to lead to a sale.
But sellers let themselves down on two fronts. The first is inadequate lighting. Make sure you’re in a bright room when you take the photo.
The other thing is the backdrop. This can be a little more challenging to sort out. But you can make your own backdrop to suit both your style and your product.
Keep Customers Informed
Great sellers will let customers know what is happening to their order, every step of the way. Even in 2016, it can still be daunting handing over money to a stranger in the hope that they’ll ship a product in return. Subscribe to eBay’s Selling Manager Pro and keep your customers up to date.
