As you may or may not know, smart TVs and streaming media devices are making their appearance known in grand fashion. In fact, they real took center stage over the last couple of years after making their grand debut in the early 2000s. TV technology and streaming technology is getting better by the year. The ability to add streaming media to your TV or stream directly from a device makes watching TV much more enjoyable. You can select exactly what you want to watch now instead of select from a list of channels. Those of us that do not yet have such a device are missing out. Some people may find that streaming media devices are better than smart TVs because you have better content availability and you have the luxury of selecting the optimal TV. Smart TVs pin you to a specific number of TVs. Personally, I would rather by the TV with the features I want and then connect a device with all of the content I want. Streaming media devices such as the StreamSmart S4 make this possible. Now there are several features that you may want to consider when selecting your device.
Design
The design of the devices are typically sleek and small. Most streaming media devices are designed to be low profile so that they blend in with your home theater system. They typically do not take up much room and some even plug into the back of your TV into the HDMI port. You will not be able to see it and forget it is there. Some of them plug into a power source and then either sit next to your TV or you can clip it to the top or side of your TV for convenience. Most are black with rounded edges that look nice and sleek. They are getting smaller and slimmer each time a new version comes out. With that said you have the option of getting the box type device or the stick versions that plug into the back of your TV. Each of them have their own value and they all require Wi-Fi connection.
Remote
Each device will come with a remote. Some are better than others, but most are small with their own unique characteristics. Some of the devices allow you to download an app to your phone or tablet so that you can control the device from the app. Another widely popular option on most of the remotes have is a microphone. You can push the microphone button and then you can tell the device what to do. By saying ‘search’, ‘navigate’, ‘play’, and so on you can control the remote using your voice. The only thing you have to do is switch HDMI inputs from satellite or your TV provider to your streaming media device. Some remotes have simple buttons, others have multi-touch features. They go from extremely simple to more complex.
Interfaces
Every streaming media device is based on content, but not every device has the same content available to its users. For example, Apple TV is based on iTunes apps. Apple believes the future of TV is going to be based on apps, not the channel based approach. Apple and others like Amazon are also embracing this feeling. The evolution of TV is changing and companies like Apple, Roku, Amazon, Google, and StreamSmart are finding ways to present TV to their users in a much more efficient manner. These companies may all present them in different ways. It may be app based, via instant video, etc., but it still proves that we are evolving with technology and the future is open-ended. Streaming media is still fairly new and there is much more we need to uncover. The key is developing devices that met consumer needs and wants.
Streaming Quality
The quality of the media displayed will always be based on the internet service provider a user has and the Wi-Fi data plan they have. You need to have a HD capable data plan with enough data to stream a large amount of data. Low quality internet is not going to get you want you want. You will also need a nice quality TV that can display HD to meet what the streaming device is providing.
