When’s the Best Time to Buy a Laptop Computer

laptop

In 2020, computer manufacturers shipped a staggering 275 million computer units. That was a record-breaking year, as it signified the biggest growth in PC sales in the last decade.

In fact, the demand for desktop and laptop computers last year was so big it exceeded the supply for some time. Because of this shortage, many shoppers ended up having a hard time buying new laptops.

Thankfully, supplies have since then rebounded, so it’s once again easy to snag a new device.

The big question now is, when is the best time to buy a laptop computer this year? Well, unless you’re in dire need of a new laptop, it’s best to buy one during one of the special sales events this year.

We rounded up all these holiday deals and promotions you should mark on your calendar, so be sure to read on!

January

New year, new gear, right? This is especially true for tech manufacturers joining the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The CES is a yearly January event, although the first one took place in June of 1967.

Many computer makers launch their new products at the CES, as it’s one of the biggest annual tech events. With the new models introduced, manufacturers then have to make way for new supplies. This is why they tend to hold sales on older models right around or after the CES.

So, if you need a new laptop to start the year right, time your purchase during or after the CES. You might be able to score huge discounts on an existing laptop model. That’s if you don’t mind buying an older model, as most of the deals apply to older stocks.

April

The best time to buy a new laptop during this month is on Earth Day, which is every April 22 of the year. Tech brands run special deals in celebration of this day to promote eco-friendliness. These offers also apply to other items, such as smartphones and tablets.

A perfect example is the gift card incentive for recycling old electronics. You give your old laptop back to its manufacturer, and you’ll get a gift card in exchange. You can then deduct the card’s value from the purchase price of the new laptop you want to buy from the same brand.

Many manufacturer websites, such as Lenovo.com, also hold online sales throughout April. In keeping with the Earth Day theme, though, most discounts are for refurbished items.

There’s nothing bad about refurbished devices unless you want a brand-new device. Refurbished items often get sent back to their manufacturers for minor cosmetic flaws. The refurbishing team then fixes these small issues and repackages the items for sale.

May

Memorial Day is a federal American holiday always observed on the last Monday of May. Many manufacturers, including computer makers, reserve their best deals for US military personnel. However, you’d still be able to snag money-saving offers even as a regular consumer.

June

The third Sunday of June each year marks Father’s Day. Many tech makers launch special deals for all the dads out there in celebration of this special day. You don’t have to be a father to get access to these offers, but if you’re shopping, why not gift your dad new tech, too?

July

According to experts, technology gave rise to and continues to support independence. In line with this, you can expect some of the best laptop deals on the fourth of July, which marks Independence Day. If you miss this, don’t worry, as many retailers extend their offers throughout the first week of July.

If you now shop a lot from Amazon, keep your eyes and ears open for Amazon Prime Day. The company usually holds it in the first half of July, except in 2020, when it took place in October. You need to be an Amazon Prime member to unlock the colossal discounts available on this special day.

Back-to-School Season

Whether you’re a student or an educator, the back-to-school season is one of the best times to buy a new laptop. Computer makers roll out massive deals to improve access to affordable technology.

The exact dates vary, but many manufacturers start to offer discounts in late August. Some roll out their deals in early September, and most offers are available for the whole month.

If you miss these promotions, check if your favorite brand has an education discount. These are programs for students and those employed within the education sector. Qualified individuals enjoy year-round discounts on not just computers but accessories, too.

Apple, Lenovo, and Samsung are some of the PC makers who offer education discounts.

September

Aside from marking the start of the school year, September also celebrates Labor Day. This federal holiday, which honors the US labor movement, falls on the first Monday of the month. Since we’re talking labor here, you’re sure to find great deals on work and business laptops on this day.

Another big September event that spurs sales is the European Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA). The IFA used to be a platform for introducing the latest in television technology. However, it’s now also common for companies to use it as a promotional tool for new laptops and smart devices.

Keep in mind that when brands roll out new products, they usually focus on ramping up new stocks. Consequently, they have to reduce the volume of their old model stocks. As a result, computer makers cut the prices of their old supplies, which is pretty much the same with CES.

Black Friday

Did you know that US consumers spent a record $9 billion on Black Friday 2020? After all, almost everything goes on sale during this once-a-year event, including laptops. It’s one of the most awaited sales events of the year, as the prices of consumer goods shrink by at least 50% on this day.

Black Friday doesn’t have a specific date, but it’s always on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day.

Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday following Thanksgiving Day. Like Black Friday, it’s one of the most popular, special shopping days in the US. It’s even bigger than Black Friday, as US consumers spent $10.8 trillion last Cyber Monday 2020.

So, if you miss out on the earlier laptop deals, this day is your next chance to snag a discount. Some computer makers offer as much as 70% to 80% off on their products during this one-day event.

Holidays

Cyber Monday is the last of the biggest tech deals of the year, but there will always be holiday discounts. They won’t be as big, but you should still take advantage of them if you decide to gift away laptops.

It’s also a good idea to check manufacturer websites for surprise year-ender sales. You might be able to snag a great deal on New Year’s Eve, which would be an awesome way to start the new year right.

Outlet Sales

Were you aware that the US is home to more than 5,000 computer stores? Some of these are direct computer manufacturer outlet stores, while others are retailers. Most, if not all regularly hold in-store sales throughout the year.

The sales days mentioned above also apply to these outlet stores. However, it’s typical for them to run special deals, such as during their anniversaries.

So, the next time you visit their store, be sure to ask when their next sales date is.

Clearance Days

Many retailers also offer clearance sales, usually at the end of the year or at the start of the new year. The sales dates also often coincide with the new release from the brands that the stores carry. Stores that are moving to a new location or are permanently closing also run clearance sales.

Birthday Deals

Many companies, including PC makers, celebrate their birthdays by offering discounts to customers. In many cases, these birthdays are usually the day the company got incorporated. Others celebrate it on the day that marked their first opening date.

Many others show customer appreciation by giving birthday celebrators gift cards or vouchers. In this case, you first need to subscribe to the company’s newsletter to get access to the deals.

Mark Your Calendar for the Best Time To Buy a Laptop Computer

Most would agree that the best time to buy a laptop computer is Cyber Monday, followed by Black Friday. After all, it’s during these days wherein you’d see laptop prices go down by more than 70%. That’s if you can wait until the end of the year, but if not, just time it right and buy on any of the days we discussed above.
